Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of intercultural communication in preserving local culture within the multicultural society of Asahan Regency. Employing a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods, this research finds that social interaction between indigenous people and migrants not only fosters social integration but also strengthens local cultural values. Symbolic Interaction Theory is used to analyze how cultural symbols are transmitted and adapted in daily life. The findings indicate that intensive and inclusive communication between ethnic groups in Asahan contributes to the revitalization of local culture through joint participation in traditional ceremonies, performing arts, and the use of local languages. Local culture not only endures but also evolves by accommodating new elements that enrich the community’s collective identity. This study asserts that intercultural communication can serve as a cultural strategy to ensure the sustainability of cultural heritage amid globalization
