Abstract

This study aimed to describe the coffee shops naming in Aceh through an anthropolinguistic approach. The qualitative paradigm through the anthropolinguistic approach is applied in this study. The data were words or phrases on coffee shops naming in Pidie Regency, Aceh Province. The words or phrases were taken from several coffee shop boards. The data were analyzed through the meaning from anthropolinguistic view namely futuristic, situational, and memory. The text and meaning of coffee shop naming were described based on those three functions. The result of the study showed that the coffee shops naming in Pidie, Aceh from futuristic deals with the meaning of sustainability, even without using Aceh language or Aceh terms. For situational meaning, the naming is based on the name of the street where the coffee shops are located. The coffee shop naming for memory meaning is based on the place where Aceh people used to drink coffee a long time ago. Consequently, the meaning of coffee shops naming is all about the indexicality of both space and time.
